COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Georgia will begin issuing new Secure Driver's Licenses and ID's which means you'll need to bring a whole lot more paperwork to the DMV.
If you think getting a driver's license now involves a lot of red tape, just wait till Monday. That's when Secure Driver's Licenses and IDs will be issued. You'll know they're secured by the gold star on the top right corner of the ID, but, getting that gold star will mean a lot of preparation before you head to the DDS.
Here's a list of the things you will need now, in order to get a new license, or your old one renewed:
- A document to prove your primary identity
- A document to prove your Social Security number
- Two documents to prove your residential address.
The new licenses and IDs are to help avoid identity theft, give a secure identification, and meet upcoming federal requirements for boarding a commercial flight and allowing entry into federal buildings.
Until now you could just bring your current license and they would renew it without all the paperwork. Online renewal was also a major convenience, but, under the new changes that will not be allowed unless you are renewing an already secure driver's license.
To prove your Identity you will need to bring in one of the following documents:
- Certified US Birth certificate
- Valid US passport
- Certificate of Naturalization
Your current license will no longer work for a renewal. Before, you could simply tell an employee what your Social Security number was, but now, you will need one of the following:
- Social security card
- W-2 form
- Pay stub with your full Social Security number
To prove your residential address you will now need two of the following documents:
- Utility bill from the last 60 days
- Bank statement from last 60 days
- Rental contracts last 60 days
- Paycheck stub
- W-2 form
Your W-2 form will provide both your Social Security number and your residential address.
If you've just gotten married, you will need to bring in your marriage certificate, along with these documents. The DDS told News Leader 9, these new licenses and IDs will be good for 16 years.
