Schmitt rolls into 100m Freestyle finals at Olympic Trials

OMAHA, NE --- Two swimmers with ties to the Georgia swimming program advanced to the finals of the women's 100-meter freestyle on Friday at the United States Olympic Trials at CenturyLink Center.

Allison Schmitt, a rising senior from Canton, MI, won her heat and came in third overall in the semis with a time of 54.23. Schmitt already has qualified for the London Games in the 200- and 400-meter freestyle. Amanda Weir, who spent one season in Athens, had the event's top time of 54.14 in the semifinals. Weir helped the Lady Bulldogs win the 2005 NCAA title as she anchored four of the team's unprecedented five championship relays.

Rising senior Megan Romano came in 10th, stopping the clock in 54.72. Rising junior Shannon Vreeland, who likely will be chosen as an 800-meter freestyle relay alternate this weekend, placed 13th in 54.87. During the prelims, ex-Lady Bulldog Kara Lynn Joyce placed 18th in 55.49, followed by former Lady Bulldog Morgan Scroggy (28th, 56.03), rising sophomore Maddie Locus (31st, 56.13), rising sophomore Jordan Mattern (63rd, 56.90), former Lady Bulldog Andrea Georoff (67th, 56.97), ex-Lady Bulldog Kelly McNichols (92nd, 57.40), former Lady Bulldog Chelsea Nauta (102nd, 57.61) and ex-Lady Bulldog Anne-Marie Botek (117th, 57.87).

Signee Chase Kalisz qualified for the finals in the men's 200-meter individual medley, stopping the clock in 1:59.66 to come in fourth in the semis, while ex-Bulldog Robert Margalis placed 13th in 2:02.09. Former Bulldog Bill Cregar just missed advancing to the semis as he came in 17th with a time of 2:03.15. Also in the prelims, incoming freshman Ty Stewart was 21st in 2:03.31, rising sophomore Nic Fink placed 26th in 2:03.69, former Bulldog Peter Benner came in 35th in 2:04.75 and rising sophomore Alec Cohen was 96th in 2:07.85.

In the women's 200-meter breaststroke, signee Annie Zhu narrowly missed the finals as she came in ninth with a time of 2:27.23 in the semis. Former Lady Bulldog Michelle McKeehan placed 12th in the semis in 2:29.66. Rising junior Melanie Margalis stopped the clock in 2:31.97 to come in 26th during the prelims, followed by rising senior Jana Mangimelli 28th in 2:32.37, ex-Lady Bulldog Mhyria Miller 43rd in 2:34.33, rising sophomore Olivia Boggs 57th in 2:35.97 and rising sophomore Shannon O'Malley 85th in 2:37.84.

In the men's 200-meter backstroke prelims, signee Garrett Powell came in 18th with a time of 2:01.89, Stewart was 33rd in 2:03.14 and rising sophomore Jared Markham placed 57th in 2:04.49.

The Trials will continue on Saturday with prelims in the women's 800-meter freestyle, and prelims and semifinals in the men's 50-meter freestyle, the men's 100-meter butterfly and the women's 200-meter backstroke. Medals will be awarded in the women's 200-meter breaststroke, the men's 200-meter backstroke, the men's 200-meter individual medley and the women's 100-meter freestyle.
