Bulldogs Schmitt, Weir earn Olympic relay spots

OMAHA, NE - Allison Schmitt's impressive performance in the United States Olympic Trials continued on Saturday with a third-place showing in the 100-mere freestyle at CenturyLink Center.

Schmitt, who earlier won the 200- and 400-meter freestyles, touched the wall is 54.30 seconds to finish just .15 off qualifying for a third individual event next month in London. Amada Weir, another former Lady Bulldog, came in fifth at 54.41 and all but secured a spot on a second Olympic team as a potential relay member.

Schmitt, a rising senior from Canton, Mich., fell shy in her attempt to become just the second swimmer in history (joining Shirley Babashoff from 1976) to win the 100-, 200- and 400-meter freestyle races in a single U.S. Olympic Trials.

Weir, a 2004 Olympian, swam for the Lady Bulldogs in 2005 and anchored four victorious relays at the NCAA Championships and helping Georgia win its fourth national title.

In the men's 200-meter individual medley, incoming freshman Chase Kalisz placed fifth with a time of 1:59.87.

Signee Matt Ellis came in 14th in the semifinals of the men's 100-meter butterfly, posting a time of 53.26. During the prelims, former Bulldog Mark Dylla was 22nd in 54.02, ex-Bulldog Michael Arnold came in 52nd in 54.60, rising junior Doug Reynolds placed 68th in 54.91 and signee Ty Stewart finished 96th in 55.44.

In the men's 50-meter freestyle prelims, Arnold came in 17th in 22.70 and former Bulldog Kevin Frankenfeld was 78th in 23.33.

Rising sophomore Amber McDermott touched in 8:43.93 to place 19th in the women's 800-meter freestyle prelims.

In the women's 200-meter backstroke prelims, signee Hali Flickinger was 29th in 2:15.17, followed by rising senior Kelsey Gaid (34th, 2:15.55), former Lady Bulldog Morgan Scroggy (35th, 2:15.57), rising sophomore Nicole Vernon (43rd, 2:15.88), ex-Lady Bulldog Kristen Shickora (46th, 2:16.00) and rising sophomore Jordan Mattern (58th, 2:16.94).

The Trials will continue on Sunday with prelims and semifinals in the women's 50-meter freestyle, prelims in the men's 1,500-meter freestyle, and finals in the women's 200-meter backstroke, the men's 100-meter butterfly, the women's 800-meter freestyle and the men's 50-meter freestyle. Prelims will begin at 11 a.m. and the finals will take place at 7:45 p.m. ET.
