Celebrate 4th of July in Columbus

If you're not packing up the family and hitting the road for the 4th of July, there are plenty of fun activities for the entire family to enjoy here at home.

Head down to the Chattahoochee River for WTVM's Thunder on the Hooch.  There'll be plenty of fun events, great food and a fireworks show.

Some of your favorite personalities from News Leader 9 will also be there to get in on the fun.  The festivities start at five. Admission is free.

If you're looking for a way to cool off, hitting the pool is never a bad idea.  For a small fee you can take a dip in any of the four public pools in Columbus.

Maybe you're in the mood for history. The National Infantry Museum is where you want to be.  The 44th of July is packed full of fun activities.

"We're starting off with a band concert by the maneuver center of excellence band," National Infantry Museum volunteer John Dugger said.

The concert will be from 11-2pm out on the green in front of the museum.

"After that, there's a tour of the Last 100 Yard Ramp and there's also two tours for World War II Street," said Dugger.

If you'd rather stay inside, you can catch a free movie at the IMAX Theatre.

"There's also a family film fest that's being held here at two times, nine and 11 for families where they have family oriented films," Dugger said.  The museum will also be opened for tours. There's no charge for any of the activities.

While you celebrate with your family, take some time to remember what the 4th of July is all about; our nation declaring its independence from Britain in 1776. Happy 44th of July!
