Airbus picks Mobile, Ala. for first assembly plant in United States

MOBILE, AL (WTVM) -

Airbus has chosen Mobile, Alabama as the site of its first assembly plant in the United States in an official announcement on Monday.

The plant, which will make passenger airplanes, is expected to cost $600 million to build and will employ 1,000 people when it reaches full production.

"We are honored at Airbus to be a part of a truly America celebration in an American town we are proud to call home," said Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier.

The official announcement gives the European aerospace giant its first foothold in the U.S. to compete with arch rival Boeing, which has employed hundreds of Alabamians for years.

Airbus had planned to build in Alabama previously to manufacture refueling tankers for the U.S. Air Force, but lost a contract in 2011.
