Muscogee County School Board hires 9 principals in special meeting

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Muscogee County School Board approved a move to fill nine vacant principal positions. Newly appointed interim Superintendent Dr. John Phillips presented the recommendations to the board Thursday afternoon in a special called meeting at the public education center.

Previously the same nominees were presented to the board by former Superintendent Dr. Susan Andrews during a meeting in late May. During that meeting, five board members blocked seven principals from being hired.

On May 21st 2012 7 principal nominations were brought before the board by former superintendent Susan Andrews; they were all shot down. John Phillips says he believes the boards decision back then wasn't personal.

"As far as I know I think they just had some issues that they wanted answered and felt like they weren't ready to make that decision that night," Phillips said.

Phillips says the most important thing now is keeping up academic standards across the district...and continuing the search for a permanent superintendent.

The new principals will fill slots left open at the following schools:

Dr. Cenobia Moore as Principal of Brewer Elementary
Ms. Clara Davis as Principal of Britt David Magnet Academy
Ms. Tammy Anderson as Principal of Cusseta Road Elementary School
Mr. Chris Cox as Principal of Double Churches Middle School
Ms. Jan Greene as Principal of Mathews Elementary School
Ms. Gayla Childs as Principal of North Columbus Elementary School
Ms. Dawn Upshaw Grantham as Principal of Richards Middle School
Dr. Sheila "Precious" Evans as Principal of Wesley Heights Elementary School
Ms. Shiann Williamson as Principal of Waddell Elementary School

School starts next month.  Students attending school on a traditional schedule will report to school to verify assignments Thursday, August 9. School begins Monday, August 13.

Year-round students in Muscogee County report to school on Thursday, July 12 to verify assignments.  The first day of class for year-round students is Monday, July 16.
