AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

The new $72 million Auburn University Student Activity and Wellness Center is a year away from being completed.

Construction on the massive, 240,000 square foot facility began last spring and is slated to be completed spring of next year.

The facility boasts an indoor track that measures a third of a mile long and snakes up and down through the center. There is also an outdoor recreation and leisure pool for students, faculty and staff.

"We are going to have an outdoor recreation program which is something we have never had," said Jennifer Jarvis, director of Campus Recreation. "Students can rent kayaks and canoes, or they can go on outdoor rec trips, either locally or international recreation trips. We plan to offer everything from A to Z in outdoor rec and it's going to be a huge thing for our students."

Jarvis said the state-of-the-art facility will be a great recruiting tool for Auburn University to attract new students and retain students already on campus.

A few years ago Auburn students voted overwhelmingly to raise their student fees in order to fund the project, located just across the street from the Auburn Arena.
