Harris County Shotgunners: The best team you've never heard of

They're the best team you've never heard of.

The Harris County High School Shotgun team has been busy preparing for yet another trip to the Scholastic Clay Target National Championships.

"Of course we want to win the National Championship," said head coach Austin Shepherd. "We've got four strong squads. They weren't too far out of first place at the state and we look at that as just a few targets down. You know, it's just like any other sport -- you have good days and bad days."

Since 2001, The Tiger shotgunners have racked up 17 state championships and nine national title. A lot of the success comes from having a great support system.

President and CEO of the shot gun team, Mark Hall said, "I think they're going to do exceptionally well," shotgun club president Mark Hall said. "I'm looking forward to seeing them break a lot of targets."

The Tiger shooters are feeling just as upbeat as the coaches about their chances for another championship.

"I feel confident, me and my squad," said Brandon Pitz, who finished third in last year's nationals. "We've got to take this first place at Nationals and bring it home."

Brandon's father, Jim, is an assistant coach, and he wants the kids to be the best they can be in everything, not just this sport.

"The goals that they can set here and achieve are goals that they will be able to set and achieve in their future," Pitz said.

The Clay Target Nationals get started next Monday in Sparta, Illinois, as the Tigers shoot for a tenth national title.
