First case of West Nile confirmed

The southwest Georgia Department of Public Health has confirmed one case of the West Nile virus in Albany.

Here are two tips you can use to help ward off the biting insects:

  1. Mosquitoes need water to breed, so you'll want to remove any standing water around your home.
  2. Wear long sleeved shirts, long pants and socks when outdoors and use insect repellant containing Deet.

West Nile virus symptoms include headache, fever, neck discomfort, muscle and joint aches and a rash.

These symptoms usually develop three to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
