When the weather gets hot we depend on air conditioning to keep cool.
However, some people don't have that luxury or they can't afford to pay their electric bill during the summer.
The Valley Rescue Mission lends a helping hand to those that need fans during the summer. So far this year they have given away 240 fans, which is nearly 100 less than they gave away last year.
Last week they gave away their final fan, and have turned away at least a dozen people this week.
"Most of us who are accustomed to having air-conditioning or cooling in our homes have no idea what it's like," said Dora Spires, family service counselor. "We have clients who come in here who look as if they are in a panic state because they don't have that sufficient cooling."
That's why Storm Team 9 has created the WTVM Fan Club, and we are asking for your help. We're collecting new or gently used fans at our WTVM Studios on 1909 Wynnton Road.
You can drop off the fans Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Here's a stat that will likely surprise many of you: heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States. On average, it kills more than tornadoes, hurricanes, floods and lightning combined.
That's why we need your help to collect as many fans over the next few weeks as possible. The Valley Rescue Mission will be collecting the fans and giving to those in need.
