Officials predict increase in alligator hunting permit applications

(WTVM) - State officials expect a record number of people to apply for Georgia alligator hunting permits.

You must apply by July 31.

Last year, more than 15,000 people from across the nation applied for just 850 permits. They expect more applicants this year.

Veteran gator hunter John Wagnon says the popularity of the sport is growing.

"Absolutely," Wagnon says. "Absolutely. You have to credit some of it to the program 'The Swamp People.' It's a popular program and people see it."

You have to apply for your permit online this year. Each year you are denied, you earn a priority point.

It normally takes at least four or five years to earn a permit.
