Police: Child suffers from broken wrist, severe bruising from mother's abuse

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Horrific details came out in Columbus Recorders Court Monday morning about a local mother accused of abusing her 4-year-old daughter.

It's at a home on Clarabelle Street in Columbus where investigators say the child endured torture at the hands of her own mother.

Monday morning, 25-year-old Raven Dennis pled not guilty to several serious charges including cruelty to children and false imprisonment.

In Recorders Court, Columbus police testified that Dennis called the Division of Family and Child Services and told them she couldn't control her child and if they did not come to get the child, she would hurt her.

We spoke with several neighbors who say Dennis is very quiet and usually keeps to herself, and it's hard to imagine this type of abuse going on, right on their street.

Detectives testified when officers arrived at the home, they found the little girl by herself on the front porch, with severe bruises all over her body and face.

She also has a broken wrist and according to investigators, had layers of skin missing from her wrists due to her mother tying her to a wooden bed post.

Police reports say Dennis tied her daughter to the bed post with plastic flex cuffs to calm her down.

Investigators say Dennis admitted to whipping the child with a leather belt, but the mom also told them the 4-year-old was fighting her so she fought back.

Sabrina Hayes with DFCS testified that a pediatrician filed a complaint in May about a burn mark on the girl's right hand.

The DFACS representative also stated the family has a prior record of abuse in another Georgia county; however, it is unclear if Dennis has been investigated for child abuse in the past.

Dennis is being held in the Muscogee County Jail on a $56,000 bond.
