(WTVM) - The Department of Defense launched a new website on Wednesday listing service members awarded for their brave acts.
The Pentagon created the database to combat false claims that people never actually honored for combat valor sometimes make.
It allows the public to see if a person officially received an award.
Defense secretary Leon Panetta made the announcement today to a congressional panel.
"You're all aware of the Supreme Court decision that determined that free speech allows someone to lie about awards and honors," Panetta said. "Free speech is one thing, but dishonoring those who have been honored on the battlefield is something else."
Panetta said a new Pentagon website will list the names of all the Americans who have earned the Medal of Honor since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
It will soon expand to include other recipients of military valor awards and medals.
