Police say elderly woman lost $15,000 in scam

RAINBOW CITY, Ala. (AP) - Police say two women talked an 86-year-old into withdrawing nearly $15,000 from her bank after approaching the elderly woman outside of a mall.

Rainbow City Police Lt. Chase Jenkins says the scam began when the pair showed the older woman an envelope they claimed contained about $100,000 that they said someone had dropped or lost.

The Gadsden Times reports the women said they called a lawyer to meet them to see if they could keep the money, and offered to cut her in if she would help them pay the attorney.

The women went with her to the bank, where she withdrew the money and gave it to them.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Rainbow City Police Department's criminal investigation unit at 256-413-1234 or 256-442-2511.
