EDITORIAL: Physician Shortage

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Georgia is facing a critical shortage of physicians into the near future. The state ranks 37th in the nation in the number of physicians per capita and could get worse due to an aging physician workforce.

To help produce more quality physicians dedicated to practicing in Georgia the Mercer School of Medicine has established a campus in Columbus, working closely with the Columbus Regional Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital.

Third and 4th year medical students have enrolled in the program and doing clinical rotations in Columbus.

Students will spend time at both institutions so they can graduate fully trained to begin their medical careers. We applaud local effort that made this program possible.

Columbus Regional and St. Francis have been great partners in the effort as well as folks like Pete Robinson, Jimmy Elder, Richard Smith, mercer university and many more.

We know these students will be well trained and will learn to love our community.

Hopefully many of the graduates will choose to call Columbus home which can only mean better health care for our citizens.
