Shootings this summer near the campuses of Auburn University and the University of Alabama have left many parents and students alike concerned about safety.
A gunman opened fire at a pool party at an Auburn Apartment complex killing three people, including two former Auburn football players. Gunfire rang out at a Tuscaloosa bar leaving 17 people hurt - among the victims were Alabama students.
As the school year approaches many schools are upgrading security.
Auburn has several officers on campus at all times and Columbus Technical College now has it's own police force.
College campuses are often insulated from the communities they operate in - leaving some with a false sense of security, but here are some tips to help keep students safe on and off campus:
Don't walk alone at night.
Know where the panic or emergency phones are on campus...
Have a "safety buddy" - someone to call for a ride or help.
Before going to a party, tell someone where you're going and when you'll be back.
College should be fun and exciting. Let's make sure it's safe too.
