70 drug users, makers and dealers arrested in big roundup

For an exhausting four months, agents with the Chambers County multi-jurisdictional task force bought and sold drugs nearly every day all across the county.

Thursday morning, agents wrapped up the mission by putting dozens of suspected drug users, makers and dealers in handcuffs -- 74 people were arrest on 94 arrest warrants.

News Leader 9 rode along for the arrests. Agent said about 60% of the people wanted in this roundup bought or sold illegal drugs.

Douglas Rudd was the first arrest of the day. Police said he sold drugs to an undercover agent.

The remaining warrants were for individuals who bought over the legal limit of pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient in meth.

Sheriff Sid Lockhart is most concerned about the children. We saw several of them crying, after their loved ones were led away in handcuffs.

"The meth problem is terrible in our area, it's destroying families, "said Sheriff Lockhart, Chambers County Sheriff's Department. "It's tough… they have no idea what's going on. They have done nothing. They know nothing. They just see mom and dad going off to jail. It's just sad, it really is," said Sheriff Lockhart.

The war on drugs seems never-ending at times, but every few months, at a roundup like this, agents get to feel victorious in a battle of a long fought war.

"Hopefully it will be a great deterrent for people thinking about going into the drug business," said Chief Tommy Weldon, Valley Police Department.
