Former Phenix City man pleads guilty to sexual assault
PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - A 39-year-old former Phenix City man has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 6-year-old girl in Russell County more than 13 years ago and has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Harold Roger Coverdale had been scheduled to go on trial this week before entering the plea Monday.
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported that as he stood before the judge, the mother of the victim told Coverdale "You disgust me."
Since the sexual abuse incident, Coverdale has moved to Ohio where he served an almost 3-year prison term for abusing two small children.
Assistant District Attorney Buster Landreau said the case was reopened when sheriff's deputies were answering an unrelated call and were approached by a woman who asked whatever happened to an old case where she was raped.
