COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

This past weekend, the ribbon was cut on the new George Washington Carver High School in Columbus.

The $37 million school, paid for by the 2009 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, sits on 27 acres of land on the site of the old school - a landmark in east Columbus for more than 50 years.

This new school is top of the line and believed to be one of the finest in the state. It has all the latest technology including smart boards in every classroom and wireless internet. There are also new football, softball and baseball fields.

Neighbors say the new facility is so much more than a building - it's hope for this community and the future, but Carver's Principal Chris Lindsay may have said it best when he said, the building shows the students that the community cares about them and the quality of education they're receiving..

We hope it doesn't end there. All students deserve to have good schools and a quality education.

As we prepare to begin a new school year, perhaps the New Carver High can serve as an inspiration to us all - Parents, teachers and students alike to do our best and keep improving that education every day.
