Columbus considers cremation, multiple burials to conserve cemetery space

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The city of Columbus is considering a plan to cremate poor people to save space in the Porterdale Cemetery.

Officials say cremations would allow the city to bury three people per grave, extending the cemetery's life.

Columbus buries about 81 people per year at a cost of $350 to taxpayers per burial.

At that rate, officials say it will take just over 12 years before the city runs out of room at Porterdale.
