COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Eighth grader Lorenzo Lamere attends Rothschild Middle School. To get there every day, he uses the pedestrian bridge on Buena Vista Road. Now that 20-year-old bridge leads to nowhere. City contractors recently took it down for repairs.

"That bridge has been up there for many years and has not had routine maintenance and it's faded, there are signs of rust which long term can create structural problems and safety problems," said Donna Newman, City Engineering Director.

It's one of four pedestrian bridges in Columbus. The city is responsible for the upkeep of three: the ones at Buena Vista Road, South Lumpkin, and Cusseta Road. The last one is being replaced right now. A recent survey revealed that nearly 500 students used the bridge on Buena Vista Road during peak school hours.

Without the bridge in place, students will now have to cross the high-traffic Buena Vista Road. Lamere is already doing that now when he attends summer football practice.

"I just wait for the cars to slow down and I just cross the street. Buena Vista Road is kind of crazy with traffic so you just have to watch yourself," said Lamere.

Muscogee County School District officials told us they will have additional crossing guards there while the bridge is being worked on. City Engineering Director Donna Newman says that crosswalks will also be re-drawn so getting across the road will be easier for students, but reminds parents to keep a watchful eye.

"Make sure they monitor traffic at all times just because you have protection measures in place it doesn't mean that the traveling public will obey those all the time," said Newman.

The bridge is expected to be finished in about a month.
