Babysitter fights back against thieves over attempted phone theft

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Taylor Schwartz said the only explanation she can come up with for her behavior Wednesday afternoon is instinct.

Schwartz was pushing a stroller along the 1500 block of McClendon Avenue when she was approached by two suspicious teens.

"I got an eerie feeling as I was walking up to them. One of them asked me what time it was so I grabbed my phone from the top of my purse and looked at it. That is when one of the boys grabbed it," Schwartz said.

Many, if not most people, would have let the phone go. But not the 20-year-old college student visiting from Minnesota.

"He had it and I had it and I pulled and pulled and pulled as hard as I could," Schwartz said.

During the struggle one of the teens pushed the stroller down the sidewalk, while the other pushed Schwartz into the street.

"I didn't even realize I was in the street until I realized I forgot my shoe in the street because I ran to the baby right away to see if she was OK," Schwartz said.

The 1-year-old was unhurt, but the teens took off. Schwartz said several good Samaritans came to her aide and helped police catch her attackers.

"It was so amazing how fast the police came and how quickly everybody came together," Schwartz said.

She said tears started flowing down her face after it was all over and she realized what could have happened, but she said she regrets nothing.

"I earned that phone. I worked hard for it. That's mine. That's my property," Schwartz said.
