COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus teen pleaded guilty Monday morning to charges of involuntary manslaughter for the shooting death of his best friend, Joseph Conner Weeks.

Morgan Springer will not serve any time in jail but has been sentenced to serve 10 years probation, two years of which will be supervised. In addition, Springer must serve 250 hours of community service.

Investigators say Springer was outside a Columbus home last October when a gun he was holding discharged and killed his best friend, who was inside the home at the time.

Police say the weapon belonged to the homeowners and the boys were preparing for a hunting trip.

Once the friends realized Weeks had been shot, they called 9-1-1 and tried to offer him help until the paramedics could arrive.

Weeks underwent several hours of surgery at the Medical Center before he was pronounced dead next day.

Weeks was a student at Shaw High School.
