West Point’s “Operation Peace and Tranquility” a success

The West Point Police Department and the sheriff's offices for Troup, Harris and Chambers counties conducted a four day high-intensity traffic enforcement operation from July 27 through August 4 between 8 p.m. and midnight. The LaGrange Police Department, Lanett Police Department and Georgia State Patrol also took part in the operation.

During the Operation, a total of 45 individuals were arrested on 61 various charges; including possession of ecstasy, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and DUI as well as an array of other felony and misdemeanor charges.  The 16 hour operation netted 113 traffic citations and warnings being issued, $2,300.00 in United States Currency and two vehicles being seized due to the illegal possession of narcotics.

The operation consisted of vehicle safety check points in multiple areas throughout the City of West Point, foot patrol in residential neighborhoods as well as saturated traffic enforcement. The West Point Police Department would like to express the appreciation to all the supporting agencies and their officers in this operation.

The focus point of the operation was to ensure that every neighborhood within the City of West Point remains safe from disruptive behavior, unruly individuals and as a deterrent to narcotics/criminal activity through proactive policing.

Research shows that highly visible and publicized enforcement of public safety laws reduces violations of the laws. Also, crime within a community does not rest solely on the shoulders of the police department or the city administrators. It takes the cooperation and fortitude of the citizens to rid each community of this element.

Throughout and following the operation, numerous citizens have expressed their appreciation to the police department's staff for their efforts to make the City of West Point a safe place to live.  The police department welcomes input from all concern citizens.

This operation is the first in a plan of operations to continue to provide a service to the West Point communities as a whole so that all may enjoy the peace and tranquility of our city.
