Springer Opera House announces next four films in classic series

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

The Springer has announced the schedule for the next movies in its film series.

For this season's first film, the Crowley Classic Film Series at the Springer travels back in time to 1985's "Back to the Future" at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18.

"Back to the Future" introduced audiences to Marty McFly, who broke the time barrier, busted his parents' first date and almost botched his chances of ever being born.

The "Back to the Future" trilogy of films is the ninth highest grossing film franchise in history.

On Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m., the Springer will show "A Face in the Crowd."

Andy Griffith made his film debut in "A Face in the Crowd." During political campaign season, this movie resonates even more poignantly with its tale of a country boy who rises to fame on TV and uses this to launch a political career.

On Halloween, the Springer will show the horror movie "Night of the Living Dead."

When "Night of the Living Dead" was first released, it raised controversy because it premiered at Saturday matinees and crowds of unsuspecting preteens and adolescents were in the audiences for the unprecedented grisly scenes of zombies.

In the decades since its release, "Night of the Living Dead" has become one of the most profitable independent horror movies ever made and is regularly included on greatest movie lists.

The Springer is developing a riff track, an audio commentary that viewers can listen to on iPod or other MP3 player for "Night of the Living Dead." The Springer will release instructions for downloading the riff track for those who would like to watch the movie this way.

"Night of the Living Dead" is a can't-miss event for folks who consider themselves fans of horror movies. Or Halloween!

The Springer will celebrate Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) with "Casablanca."

"Casablanca" is one of the most romantic movies ever made and is consistently ranked in the top five greatest movies of all time. And its leading actors — Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman — are two of the brightest stars in the Hollywood firmament.

All of these movies in the Crowley Classic Film Series begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Springer's Mainstage Theatre. The Springer Saloon will open for soft drinks, popcorn and other snacks at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $10. For tickets or more information call 706-327-3688.
