GE recalls dishwashers, “Hotpoint” units deemed fire hazard

(WTVM) -

A series of fires has prompted the recall of more than a million GE and Hotpoint brand dishwashers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall of about 1.3 million machines sold from March 2006 to August 2009 for between $350 and $850.

There were 15 reports of heating element failures. Seven of those failures resulted in fires, but three of those fires caused extensive property damage.

The CPSC says no one was injured in the fires.

Owners of the impacted dishwashers are advised to stop using them and turn off the fuse or circuit breaker to the machines.

Consumers are also asked not to return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where they were purchased because they are not prepared to take back the units.

GE says it will repair the problem free of charge.

The dishwashers were sold in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel.
