MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

Thousands of students in Columbus hit the books today for the first day of school, which also meant the return of traffic in and around schools across the city.

Drivers are being reminded tonight to be mindful of school zones, to slow down and watch for students on foot and in cars.

Muscogee County Interim Superintendent John Phillips says the first day back went well, adding that he's looking forward to a good school year with lots of parental involvement.

Phillips was named interim superintendent to replace Susan Andrews who retired earlier this year. The search continues for a permanent Muscogee County superintendent.
