(WTVM) - It's a milestone of sorts, especially for math geeks and pi fans alike.
The U.S. population reached 314,159,265 on Tuesday. That's pi times 100 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Pi is actually a mathematical constant and goes on into infinity, so, the number isn't exact. Math geeks celebrate the number on March 14, or Pi Day. The number has multiple engineering and scientific uses, from constructing buildings to analyzing the geometry of DNA.
The census bureau says this is a once in many generations event. He urged everyone to celebrate this "American pi."
