CLARK COUNTY, IN (WAVE) –
A Clark County man refused to be a victim when some of his belongings were stolen.
He decided to catch the
thieves using Craigslist.
Clark County Sheriff Major
Donnie Bowyer said they don't encourage people to play detective, but in this
case it helped them out.
"He got
onto Craigslist and put word out that he had some stolen property and if anyone
would see any of it out there, he would be interested in them contacting him,"
said Bowyer.
Major Bowyer said the post
eventually led to all of the man's missing items.
A man in Kentucky
contacted the man whose items were stolen and said he thought he saw a posting about some
of the victim's stolen things.
A Clark County detective
set up a sting and bought the item, which turned out to be stolen, and made two
arrests.
They said Craigslist and Facebook
makes finding stolen items harder than going to the neighborhood pawn shop, "It
used to be hard to get rid of some of these items here close but with that kind
of technology you can get it sent anywhere," Bowyer explained.
Detectives arrested Nicolas
Daugherty and Tony "Austin" McPheeters.
Both are charged with five
counts of theft and five counts of burglary.
Police said they took
everything from fishing rods to a $15,000 four wheeler from garages, sheds and
barns in northwestern Clark County.
Deputies expect to find
more items and said they could make more arrests.
