Decomposed body found in Chattahoochee River, military police investigates

Russell County investigators say the decomposed body of a man was discovered last Saturday afternoon by two fishermen.

The body was found on Fort Benning property after it apparently washed ashore from the Chattahoochee River by Uchee Creek on the Russell County side.

Authorities told News Leader 9 the body appeared to be in an advanced state of decomposition.

Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are working closely with other Federal, State and local authorities to verify the identity of the deceased individual. An autopsy will be conducted to try and determine the manner and cause of death.

According to CID Agents, at this time it is believed the individual is a civilian with no DOD affiliation, and there is no indication that he was a soldier.

To protect the integrity of the investigation, this is all the information that can be released at this time.

We'll continue to follow this story and will have the latest developments as soon as it becomes available.
