(WTVM) - Georgia's First Lady is leading an effort to improve safety around school buses.
Georgia leads the country in the number of deaths of children getting on or off school buses the last two years.
Sandra Deal brought her safety message to Harris County and Albany on Monday as part of a five-city tour kicking off the "Stop Means Stop" campaign.
"Children are my heart," said Deal. "I love children, and I love seeing them advance and be progressive and they are the future of our country, future of our state. I want to encourage their education and I want to encourage their safety."
Officials stress drivers must stop in both directions when a school bus activates its stop-arm unless they are on the opposite side of an unpaved median or barrier.
