ATLANTA (AP) - State agriculture and health officials are warning Georgians to take safety precautions while attending state fairs and other events this fall due to human infections from a flu virus normally found in pigs.
Georgia Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black said in a statement that people should wash their hands after being near pigs or touching the animals.
Black said there's no reason to stay away from fairs, but he urged people to take precautions.
On Aug. 17, the Centers for Disease Control announced that 225 cases of H3N2v infection from a new strain of swine flu had been reported in the U.S. during 2012. Cases have been reported in Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Illinois. No deaths have been reported as a result of H3N2v.
