PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -

Phenix City Councilman Arthur Sumbry, Sr. has dropped out of the race for city council. Sumbry was running for council seat District 3, along with his son Arttie Sumbry.

The announcement comes just days before area voters head to the polls for the city's municipal elections.

Sumbry's Daughter Sabrina made the announcement Wednesday afternoon at the city's Municipal Building on 12th Street.

"We are endorsing my brother Arttie Sumbry and asking for your vote and your support for city council of Phenix City and continue to pray for him and pray for my brother and all the leaders of this community," Sabrina Sumbry said.

Arthur Sumbry, Sr. was previously charged with several felony counts, including perjury and forgery, and is scheduled for trial in December.

He told News Leader 9 that he will stand behind his son. Arthur Day who is also running for District 3 told news leader 9 that with Sumbry dropping out the race, "This will open up new opportunities for new candidates," Day said.

District 3 candidate Eunice Patrick says, "[Arthur Sumbry] has severed his time and maybe someone else can carry on now."

Sumbry's trial is expected to start December 3rd.
