Columbus blood supply at all-time low

In just one hour you can save three lives, and all it takes is for you to roll up your sleeves.  It's something the local Red Cross hopes you'll consider.

As of this summer, blood supplies have hit an all-time 15 year low.  Officials in Columbus and surrounding areas say they are only collecting half of the amount of blood needed to supply local hospitals, creating an emergency situation.

In an effort to increase blood donations, donor recruiter Kristen Kiefer says they are offering incentives to donors.

"We've been on emergency appeal throughout the summer and we've offered things such as t-shirts," Kiefer says. "We've also asked some of our blood drive sponsors to have extra blood drives.  In addition, we're offering Sports Clips coupons for free haircuts here in the donor center for the entire month of August."

Although the perks are great, Kiefer says the donor will gain more.

"I think the best thing about donating blood is the feeling that you get knowing that you're helping someone that you may not ever meet but yes there are other perks," says Kiefer.

If you'd like to donate blood or host a blood drive, you can call the donor center at 706-317-3654.
