Safe Kids Columbus debuts new crosswalks

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Girls Inc. held a special ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the newly painted crosswalks and installed safety measures on Friday.

The leading cause of accidental death and injury for children fourteen and younger is motor vehicle related. Because of this, Safe Kids Columbus took the initiative to help protect children as they cross the street.

"Some of our after school programs like Girls Inc. is the only safe haven our children have somewhere to go, somewhere to feel safe, somewhere where they can have an extension to learning," said Superintendent John Phillips of the Muscogee County School District.

The whole project was designed to create a safe path for children to walk from school to Girls Inc.

More than $6,000 was donated by Fed Ex and other agencies for this initiative.
