What to put in your hurricane kit

(WTVM) - Officials are recommending people in the storm area have a hurricane kit ready to go.

There's more to having a kit beyond non-perishable food items. The National Hurricane Center and American Red Cross suggests you have a kit that will carry you through a week or two after a storm or other disaster.

Your kit should include:

At least one gallon of water daily per person for seven to ten days

An ax to use if you stay and need to escape from your house

Blankets and pillows

Rain gear and sturdy shoes

Special items for babies and the elderly

Toiletries and hygiene items
