PHENIX CITY, AL (WTVM) -
Phenix City elected its first African-American mayor. Tuesday, Phenix City School Board President Eddie Lowe won the election with 64% of the votes – beating three other candidates.
City council member, Max Wilkes, was in second with 27% of the votes followed by Johnny Robinson and Antonio Carter with 1%.
Lowe will take office in November. He will replace current Phenix City Mayor Sonny Coulter who decided not to seek re-election.
Voters in several Alabama cities defeated incumbent mayors. In Tuskegee, former Mayor Johnny Ford got 57% of the votes to defeat incumbent Mayor Omar Neal.
In Decatur, challenger Don Kyle captured 45% of the vote Tuesday in a four-person mayoral race involving incumbent mayor Don Stanford, who got about 6%. Kyle now faces the second-place finisher, Carl Cole, in a runoff election Oct. 9.
In Anniston, former municipal Judge Vaughn Stewart defeated 10 other candidates in the mayor's race, including incumbent Gene Robinson.
