(WTVM) - The U.S. government says the number of Americans receiving food stamps in recent months is at a record high.
According to officials, participation increased 0.4 percent from May and was 3.3 percent higher than the year before. More than 46 million people have received assistance throughout the year as the unemployment rate stayed higher than 8 percent.
"Too many middle-class families who have fallen on hard times are still struggling," Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in an e-mailed statement as quoted in this article from Bloomberg Businessweek. "Our goal is to get these families the temporary assistance they need so they are able to get through these tough times and back on their feet as soon as possible."
The government is expected to release the latest unemployment figures this Friday.
