Would you step up in a critical time of need?
If so, the American Red Cross wants your help – they are in dire need of blood and platelet donations.
The Red Cross said summer is a typically slow time for them, but this year, the supply is at the lowest it's been in 15 years. They're hoping more people will step up.
"About half of the blood we collect comes from people that donate once a year," said Dean Smith, district manager for the American Red Cross. "And Lord love them, if we didn't have them coming in, we wouldn't have the blood on the shelves. But if only half of the people who gave once, give twice, we'd never have a blood shortage."
Emily Barker is very familiar with the need for donors. She depends on them for her blood and platelet transfusions twice a week.
"What happens one day if I need that?" wonders Barker. "What if that's what's going to save my life one day?"
