Opelika double homicide investigation reveals victims' names

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - The Opelika Police Department has now released the names of the two victims shot to death in Opelika last night.

The victims are identified as Jamarius Cornae Lockhart, age 25 and Stephen Terell Bynum, age 20, both of Opelika.

At approximately 5:53 PM last night, the Opelika Police Department received reports of gunshot victims in the 1000 block of York Avenue. Officers responded and found the two young males lying on the ground, suffering gunshot wounds to the torso.

"At this point we have not determined any kind of motive or whether the two victims knew each other. The case is still a very fluid investigation and is continuing," states Captain DeLong of the Opelika Police Department.

The Lee County Coroner's office responded to the scene and both victims were pronounced dead at approximately 6:02 PM.

The bodies have been taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.

David Jones uses York Avenue to commute to work every day. He was stunned at the news of the shooting and never thought something this horrid could happen in the area.

"It's a quiet neighborhood and it's just terrifying that this kind of thing happens, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families. The randomness and the unpredictability of it is the worst thing," explains Jones.

"At this point we want witnesses or anybody who may have seen or heard anything to come forward," says DeLong.
