COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus police officer was injured Thursday after trying to stop a woman accused of shoplifting.

Authorities say Marlina Rivers, 41, attempted to take about $200 worth of merchandise from a Kmart store located on Airport Thruway.

The officer, Whitney Foster, responded and tried to stop Rivers who was in her car attempting to leave the scene. Officer Foster was dragged across the pavement and sustained scratches to her right eyelid, right eyebrow and arm.

Rivers was charged with aggravated assault on an officer and theft by shoplifting.

According to police reports, Rivers was observed by Kmart Loss Prevention taking a purse off the shelf and filling it with merchandise. When a loss prevention officer confronted Rivers about the items, she ran out the door. The loss prevention officer followed Rivers into the parking lot and grabbed the stolen merchandise.

Rivers is expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing in Recorder's Court Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
