Smiths Station Family Barely Escapes Fire

It was a close call for a Smiths Station family when their house caught fire Saturday night.  The building went up in smoke at about 8:30 p.m. on County Road 430 near Rock's Mini Storage.  A neighboring house received major damage to it's roof and siding due to the intense heat.  The flames could be seen from far away in the night sky.

One man driving past the fire jumped into action.  After calling 911, Ryan Marshall of Phenix City ran into the neighborhood to alert residents of the danger.  He described how one person had to escape the fire by hopping out on crutches.

"The lady in there, she has a son. He just had surgery, I think he's a football player. We helped him get further away from the scene because it was getting really bad. I initially it looked like a barbecue grill on fire," said Marshall.

Officials are investigating the cause of that fire.  No one was initially reported injured.
