LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A date for two Louisville residents turned tragic late Saturday night.
Police say the two were riding on a moped, when a car turned and the two collided. The man, 34-year-old Edward Fey, Junior died; the woman was taken to the hospital in grave condition.
Fey's mom received a phone call Sunday morning from the coroner.
"He asked me did I know my son was in an accident and I said no," Sharon Hanks said.
30 minutes later, the coroner came to her home and broke the news.
"He let me know that my son didn't suffer and that he was dead at the scene," Hanks said.
Police say the crash happened around 11:00 Saturday night.
"The driver of a Ford Focus was heading southbound on Cane Run Road and was attempting to make a left hand turn onto Terry. At the same time, the driver of a moped was heading northbound on Cane Run Road and the two vehicles collided," LMPD Spokesperson Alicia Smiley said.
The driver of the car wasn't hurt.
Investigators say neither Fey or his female passenger were wearing a helmet. She was taken to the hospital in grave condition. Police have not released her name.
"It was their first date," Hanks said.
A first date that ended tragically, as the family of Edward Fey Junior prepare for his wake on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm at his mom's home.
