LEEDS, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say two large dogs pounced on an 82-year-old man as he checked his mail, killing him in his yard.

Leeds Police Chief Byron Jackson says the man's wife was unable to fend off the dogs. The chief said they weighed more than 100 pounds, and an officer had to kill both of them after the Thursday afternoon attack.

St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell identified the man as Donald Thomas. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police say they believe the dogs were somehow able to get loose from a neighbor's house.

No charges have been filed. St. Clair County District Attorney Richard Minor is assisting with the investigation.
