AU mourns death of student assistant coach

AUBURN, AL (WXTX) - Auburn University is mourning the sudden death of one of its beloved students.

Joe Bagwell, a 23-year-old football enthusiast and student assistant coach to the Auburn football team, passed away suddenly before the start of the Auburn-LSU game Saturday.

Coach Gene Chizik opened his post-game news conference by announcing Bagwell died "shortly before the game.

Bagwell was a native of Huntsville, Alabama and was in his first season as a student coach after working as a student trainer in 2011.

"I literally had dinner with him several weeks ago and he seemed fine, he always being a joker, always could put a smile on your face, make you laugh and I did not see that coming," said John Chappell, a friend of Bagwell's.

Although Bagwell's cause of death hasn't been released, it is believed it was related to his heart condition from an early age.

An Auburn spokesman said he was aware of Bagwell's health situation.

Chizik provided no details on the cause of Bagwell's death but said "our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."
