BAYOU CORNE, LA (WAFB) -

Nearly four months after bubbling was first discovered in the waters of Bayou Corne, state officials are hopeful this will finally be the week they get answers to the question of what caused the sinkhole.

"No matter what happens and what we find in this cavern we still have a sinkhole out here that something caused to occur."

The answer to just what caused the sinkhole may come this week as crews from Texas Brine have now begun the diagnostic phase after drilling into the cavern over the weekend.

"One of the initial tests is the sonar and the sonar of the cavern to see if it's still intact and see if the configuration matches up with the earlier sonar done by Texas Brine," said Assumption Parish director of emergency preparedness John Boudreaux

Numbers that should begin to come in sometime during the week.

"Final reports I'm not sure they may be a week out but preliminary reports and that will start giving us some information," added Martin.

The bubbling on Bayou Corne continues like it did back in May when it was first discovered and while tests results are expected this week, if the cavern proves to be uncompromised, state officials will be heading right back to the drawing board.

"We have discussed it with DNR as well as other state agencies that if indeed it is not, we are back at square one and trying to figure out why we have a sinkhole," said Boudreaux.

"There still is bubbling in the bayou and USGS reports there is seismic activity, so we're still trying to find out what happened and in the mean time we have a sinkhole so we're trying to put all the clues together ourselves," said Martin.

A scenario Bayou Corne residents have been awaiting for nearly two months.
