Deployment ceremony held at Fort Benning for 14th Combat Support Hospital

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -

The 14th Combat Support Hospital cased its colors Monday during a deployment ceremony at Fort Benning.

In just a few days, more than 150 soldiers will be sent to Afghanistan for about nine months. The unit is made up of Fort Benning soldiers and nearly 40 medical personnel from all over the Army.

We met up with Otha Smith, whose wife is being deployed, and he told News Leader 9 how bittersweet this is for him.

"It's an opportunity to show that women are just as capable as men, but it leaves the families at home missing that stable…you know…that glue," Smith said.

The 14 is a support unit and is able to set up and care for as many as 250 casualties. The unit has previously been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan.

While overseas, the soldiers will conduct health support operations and care for American forces, coalition forces and detainees.

They will be deployed sometime later this week.
