COLUMBUS, GA -

"My dad had a lot to live for.  He had ten kids you know and he had nine grandchildren to watch grow up. Now he is going to miss out on that," said Umayma Bilal, the daughter of Byron Brown.

Bilal said there are still many questions to be answered even though a man has been arrested and charged with the death of her father, 59-year-old Byron Brown.

"Just why, because our father rarely kept money on him. It was hard getting money out of him. So, he didn't really have anything on him. So, why?" said Bilal.

Late Monday evening, 22-year-old Sandy Mitchell was arrested by Military Police on Fort Benning. Officials tell us he was visiting a 3rd Brigade soldier in the barracks when someone recognized him as a suspect in the case.

The military police then turned Mitchell over to the Columbus Police.

"It is bittersweet. You can never find closure. It doesn't bring my father back, but it does give us a sense of answers to knowing why and knowing that the guy is behind bars and that he will be facing charges in the death of my father," said Bilal.

Now, Mitchell faces multiple charges including murder after Brown was found early Sunday morning in his Yellow Cab Van at the intersection of Shelby Street and Munson Drive with a single gunshot wound to his head.

The victim's family is now saying thank-you to the community for their support including from Brown's fellow taxi drivers.

"They've been coming by with donations and food for the family. It is really nice seeing people who have that much love for our father," said Bilal.

The victim's family said Brown's funeral will be held at Battle and Battle Funeral Home in Phenix City Saturday at 2 p.m.

If you would like to make a donation to help the family, you can go to any Wells Fargo branch and ask for the Byron Keith Brown memorial fund.
