Editorial WTVM 9/26: Domestic Violence Awareness Week

Every 9 seconds a woman in the US is assaulted or beaten. Everyday more than three are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends. Alabama ranks 2nd in the nation when it comes to women killed by men in domestic violence, while Georgia comes in at #6.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It's a time to not just talk about these terrible numbers, but also to look for ways to help those who are victims. While it may seem obvious  - many don't even recognize that domestic violence is a crime and not a private family matter. That holds true even for many victims - more than 50% never report it to the authorities or ask for help.

We are fortunate in the valley to have an agency like Hope Harbour – now in it's 34th year of providing shelter and help for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. if you're a victim or suspect someone you know is, help is available.

Just dial 9-1-1 and they will put you in touch with an agency in your community. There's also a toll free hotline that will provide resources near you. It's 1-800-799-SAFE.

it's time to bring domestic violence out of the dark and shine a light on this cowardly crime.
