Long awaited community center opens in Harris County

HAMILTON, GA (WTVM) -

A new facility opened Monday in Harris County. The high school's junior ROTC raised a flag over the community center as part of the grand opening ceremony.

Officials cut a ribbon on the 42,000 sq. ft. facility that cost $7.5 million to build.

Part of that money came from SPLOST funds.

Construction was delayed due to a tornado that hit the building in November.  It was the same tornado that ripped the roof off the Harris County 911 call center.

Now that the brand new facility is complete, everyone is invited to become a member.

"You can be a county resident, you can be an out of county resident, it's open to anybody who's willing to come and join up and just have a great time, work out, and get in shape," said Ronald Walton, Harris County employee.

The community center has a gym with two full size basketball courts, a fitness room with new workout machines, plus an 8 lane indoor pool with a separate area where kids can play.

This is the first time a facility like this has been in existence in Harris County.
